Christmas Shrubs

Back to Types of Shrubs

One of the most recognized shrubs associated with Christmas is the Poinsettia, (Euphorbia pulcherrima). With its dark green leaves and deep red bracts, it adds significant Christmas color to any location, inside our out. Naturally, poinsettias are perennial flowering shrubs that can grow to 10ft / 2m tall. The deep colored leaves on the tips of the poinsettia branches are actually colored bracts (modified leaves), and the actual flowers are in the center of the group of bracts and are usually grouped as small yellow clusters.

Another popular Christmas shrub is the Holly, (Ilex). Holly can produce beautiful red berries in the fall / winter providing that both male and female bushes are near to each other. The berries are a wonderful way to add natural red and green colors of Christmas to your lawn and landscape. Traditionally, Holly has been cut and used for Christmas displays.

Another good Christmas shrub is a Yew bush. There are a few species of Yew, the most common being the Japanese Yew and the English Yew. There are hybrids of both available. The Yew can be grown as a shrub or a tree.
