Shrub Species of the Dogwood (Cornus) Genus
The Cornus genus contains more than 50 species of mostly flowering deciduous shrubs. Some species grow as small trees and some of the woody species are evergreen. Some species are herbaceous perennials. Dogwoods are very diverse, growing natively in North America, Asia, Europe The Cornus genus is split into the following subgenera;
Dogwoods are well known for their striking colors, even though most are deciduous, they provide a change of colors during the year. Many have deep green colors in the spring and summer months, with brilliant white flowers. During the Autumn months the leaves turn orange-yellow and then fall to reveal their striking red or orange-yellow stems and branches.
