Shrub Species of the Hawthorn (Crataegus) Genus

The common name Hawthorn was originally applied to several species native to northern Europe, such as the Common Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna). This common name is still used for multiple species in Britain and Ireland. However the name is now also applied to the entire genus.

Many Hawthorn species will make great hedge shrubs as they respond well to trimming and pruning, and will often produce a dense impenetrable barrier when planted in a row.

Most Crataegus Species are shrubs or small trees with thorny branches growing to 5-15 m tall, with small usually white flowers that open in May, producing a small pome fruit.
